10 days of mountain biking mayhem and fun. (Don't worry if you don't like bikes of any kind, Whistler is a big place and you can get away from it easily). Where to start!
Aug 10 - Phat Tire Crit at the Whistler Olympic plaza. Riders hammer out laps of a short 800 meter course to the adoring cheers of spectators drinking coffee from Blenz or Starbucks, eating ice cream from Dairy Queen or wondering where there kids are (in the Coffee Park - that's not it's name but if you have a child under the age of 7 you know why it is named that).
Aug 11 - Canadian Open Enduro - The competition includes 4 timed downhill sections, however (here is the kicker) the competitors need to bike uphill to the start of some of the sections. There is a Pro category (8k in prizes) and Amateur category. The downhill courses on Whistler Mtn, Blackcomb Mtn and down the Top of the World trail are going to be fun.
Aug 11 - Dual Speed and Style - a new event combining dual slalom and slopestyle into one event where speed and style come into play - This is a new one this year. Should be interesting to watch and figure out.
Aug 12th - Garbanzo DH - This is one of the big races which will be fun to watch (at least the finish). There is another 8k in prize money on the line
There is more biking events and I will get to that later. However if you want to see something a little different check out the following:
GoPro Dirt Diaries - For the first time we have a film competition where six filmmakers will compete for $6,000 in prize money. They have to complete a six minute film which will be shown on Tuesday night Aug 14th at the Whistler Olympic Plaza best seats will be $20 all the rest free. To get into this contest the film makers had to submit teasers through pinkbike.com and the top six were chose for the competition. Should be very cool.
Deep Summer Photo Challenge - Now celebrating its fourth year. The photographers will have three days to shoot bike action anywhere in the Whistler Mountain bike park and create a slideshow with the chance to get the prize money.
