Whistler Realtor Q&A – Sandra Baynham

Published on

Why did you move to Whistler?

It was a lifestyle choice. We were the typical Vancouver-weekender family for years, had seasonal rentals here, annual rentals, and spent about a third of our time here. So, in May 2015 we just decided to make the move!

I’m originally from Toronto, but lived in Vancouver for 8 years. I love the mountains, the ocean and it was a lifestyle choice – it offered me the activities and way of life I wanted.

What did you do when you first arrived in Whistler?

When I moved I immediately started working on my real estate license. With my move up here I decided to leave my past career in technology and pursue real estate, as that is something I have always been passionate about.

I feel like there’s a lot of parallels and transferable skills from my previous careers – even before working in technology I was working in financial analysis back in Ontario. My analytics skills, project management and negotiating skills all relate to working in real estate.

What is it about the lifestyle that drew you to Whistler?

My kids are seven and nine and it offers them a lot of outdoor free play, it’s a smaller community, there is more time in the mountains, and day to day you are just able to live a more active lifestyle.

What advice would you give to someone looking to buy a property in Whistler?

I would advise them to really consider how the property is going to be used throughout the year. The purpose of a home, whether it is for recreation, income, or a permanent move, really affects the direction of the buying process.

What’s your favourite aspect of working with your clients?

It’s having the ability to help them find the property of their dreams and I love having that interaction with lots of new people.

What’s your favourite season and why?

It switches! I would have to say summer right now, but it used to be winter as that was when the majority of our time was spent here. But having spent more time here during the summer, with all the activities, it has definitely overtaken winter.

If you weren’t a real estate agent what would you be?

I would be a contractor or builder! I just love homes and every aspect of the process.

What makes you smile the most?

My kids!

How do you decompress, or relax?

You don’t get a relaxing day with kids!

I love to just enjoy being out in nature here – going for a hike, a bike ride, or walk round the lake. Just doing the activities in Whistler is how I spend my downtime.

What is it like raising a family in Whistler?

It’s fantastic. I thought it would be great and it has lived up to that. The kids love the proximity to everything and the community feel especially, they also have a lot more free play and ability to explore and be kids.

What accomplishment do you consider to be the most significant in your career or life?

I think, it’s not a particular accomplishment, but that in my life I am always striving to do something that I value. I am always looking at how I can do something that makes me passionate and I love taking on new challenges.

Finally, in one sentence, why should people move to Whistler?

Community, amazing lifestyle and amazing exposure to recreational activities!
