Why You Need to Check Out the Whistler Performance Series

Whistler Live Music

Breaking news: there’s more to Whistler than just epic skiing and snowboarding.

Don’t get us wrong – the snow here in Whistler is fantastic, and there’s no better way to spend a day then up on the slopes. But when the gondolas stop spinning and the sun goes down, we in Whistler like to indulge our artistic sides.

Whistler’s cultural scene is positively booming, from world-class art galleries and museums to festivals geared towards films, writers, and all things creative.

One of the best cultural traditions has to be the Whistler Performance Series. The series of 15 shows covers an extremely wide range of performances, from musical to theatrical to comedy and beyond. Here’s why you should check out the Whistler Performance Series for yourself:

Break Out Your Dancing Shoes

The Whistler Performance Series features a fantastic array of concerts, including some of your favourite music types and perhaps some that are new to you. Still to come on this year’s roster: the Remi Bolduc Jazz Ensemble, Montreal Guitare Trio and California Guitar Trio; Sarah Hagen and Ariel Barnes on cello, and Bazacote, a Latin dance band. How’s that for variety?

You Can’t Beat the Venue

The main theatre in the Maury Young Arts Centre is one of the top venues in Whistler. The spacious theatre is always clean, the acoustics are fantastic, and believe us when we say there is not a bad seat in the house. Before the show starts, you can take in the featured exhibit in the foyer or stock up on snacks and drinks at the bar. It’s always a good time.

Fun For All Ages

Get your kids pumped on theatre with fun performances like Hamelin – A New Fable. The show is geared towards children, with fun crafts in the foyer prior to the start of the show. We encourage bringing your kids to some of the all ages performances that aren’t necessarily just for kids – it’s a great way to learn about art appreciation, theatre etiquette, and new types of cultural experiences.

A Chance to Dress Up

No, you certainly don’t have to dress up – but let’s face it, there are few opportunities in Whistler to don something a little snazzier than a flannel shirt and a toque. Dress like you’re going to the opera, or dress like you just got off the mountain – anything goes at the Performance Series.

Laugh Your Heart Out

Unfortunately, you already missed the Chairlift Revue Christmas Special – this locally written, directed, and acted show pokes fun at life in Whistler and is one of the funniest nights of the year, so make sure to catch it next December!

Fortunately, however, there are still plenty of laughs to be had at the Performance Series. Don’t miss Nashville Hurricane for a night of cabaret, comedy, and storytelling, or CBC’s This is That: Live! for some live radio comedy.

Bundle It Up and Try Something New

Pick up a Performance Series Five Pack to save on box office prices and to give yourself the chance to check out a show you might otherwise not see.

The Whistler Arts Council also offers a discounted Shakespeare Three-Pack for fans of the Bard, or a Family Pack to get the whole family involved.

Learn more about the Whistler Performance Series here, and we’ll see you at the shows!
