Whistler home with lights on

When looking to buy a property in Whistler it can be hard to narrow down your search. There are so many incredible options it can be easy to get carried away.

It’s important to remain focussed and really determine which homes are right for your needs and which homes can be excluded from your search. With that in mind, we take a look at some factors that will help you make your decision when buying in Whistler.

Location

The first thing to establish is location. Many prospective buyers come to Whistler with a specific location in mind and are either set on that, or are simply not aware of the other neighbourhoods that could match their needs.

One of the most common location requests is “ski-in/ski-out” or “slopeside”. Buyers looking for easy slope access often discount neighbourhoods because their heart is set on this feature. However, there are plenty of great neighbourhoods in Whistler which aren’t quite “slopeside” but still provide quick access to the mountain, along with other beneficial factors.

When looking for a location it’s important to be open minded and determine if this really is your biggest priority. Speak to your Realtor and listen to their recommendations as, in many cases, our buyers often find their dream home in a location they would never have looked!

Property Type

Property type is a big consideration for all buyers. Are you looking for a condo, a townhome, a chalet, or something else completely?

Depending on your requirements this can change dramatically. There are a lot of things to consider when deciding which home best suits your needs. For example, are you looking for a permanent residence? A second home? Do you want to rent it out? All of these questions must be answered in order to properly narrow down your search.

Similar to choosing a neighbourhood, deciding which property type is right has a huge influence on narrowing down your search. Ask yourself how you’re going to use the property and speak to your Realtor about what will best serve your needs.

Needs vs Wants

One way to narrow down your search is to establish your needs and want. In other words, what elements are essential, and which are just nice to have? This will help you better determine both location and property type.

Look at the number of bedrooms, the proximity to the slope, nearby amenities, rental restrictions, and anything else that is relevant to your search. Prioritizing these needs and wants will help you make an objective decision when choosing your new home, and ensure that you aren’t ruled by emotion or make rash decisions.

Making your Decision

Ultimately, when it comes to choosing the right property, the decision is yours. You will know if a specific home is what you are looking for. The important thing is to approach this point logically and with an open mind.
