Welcome to WhistlerPRIDE, Whistler’s Pride and Ski Festival

January 8, 2015
Pride in Whistler

The holidays might be behind us, but that doesn’t mean things are quieting down in Whistler. In fact, we’re getting ready to welcome the first major festival of the year: the Whistler Pride and Ski Festival. From January 24th to 31st, more than 3,000 gay men and women will arrive from 26 nations around the world to celebrate diversity, right here in our mountain town.

Now in its 23rd year, WhistlerPRIDE is one of the world’s longest running gay ski festivals. The week is filled with skiing (of course), good food, and lots of entertainment. Take a look at some of the events taking place this week – all are welcome, and tickets can be purchased at gaywhistler.com.

Comedy Time! With Margaret Cho

The most anticipated night of WhistlerPRIDE has to be the comedy show featuring none other than Margaret Cho and special guest Selene Luna. Margaret’s new stand up show tackles everything from identity to queer politics to madness, and her no-boundaries approach to comedy is spectacular to watch in person. Don’t miss the show, which takes place at the Whistler Conference Centre on January 28 from 8-10 PM.

Skiing With the Whistler Pride Ski Guides

It’s impossible to host a festival in Whistler’s winter months and not incorporate a little skiing. Every day, attendees have the option of meeting up with a Whistler Pride Ski Guide to learn the ins and outs of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Participants are split up by ability level – it’s a great chance to meet other attendees and to discover the best places on the mountains.

Exploring Whistler’s Other Snowy Activities

Not into downhill skiing or snowboarding? That doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the Whistler snow! The Adventure Group (TAG) hosts a Natural Mystic Snowshoe Tour for WhistlerPRIDE attendees to explore Whistler’s old growth forest. You can also join TAG for the WhistlerPRIDE Snowmobile Experience – single-track trails, steep climbs, and heart-racing descents are all part of the fun. There’s also zip lining and snow tubing to check out. Advanced registration is required for these activities, as they’re sure to be popular, so sign up quickly!

Bollywood Comes to Whistler

January 26 is unofficially Bollywood night in Whistler. First up: a presentation of Bollywood Beats at the Rainbow Theatre, presented by OUTtv and GayDirect. Bollywood Beats is a film about a young man who starts a dance class for Indian women. After the show, head to the Bollywood after party at Moe Joe’s – just one of the many huge parties taking place throughout the 8-day festival.

Snowball Closing Party and Chickalicious

On the last night of WhistlerPRIDE – Saturday, January 31st—attendees will have to choose between the infamous Snowball Closing Party and Chickalicious, the Women’s Closing Party. Snowball features the Grammy nominated Freemasons — this send-off party could very well be the highlight of the week. Expect stunning visuals, an insane sound system, and lots and lots of dancing. On the other hand, Chickalicious promises go go dancers and tunes from DJ Lisa De Lux – it will surely be a night for the books!
